Trademark Filing Hints Samsung Will Name its Smart Watch 'Gear'

It has long been rumored that Samsung is working on a web-connected smart watch, and now a trademark filing indicates it could be called "Samsung Gear."
As first spotted by tech website Phandroid, the Korean manufacturer officially trademarked the name last week.
Although the filing noted "Samsung Gear" can be designated for a variety of products, among the first few mentioned are "parts and fittings for watches; wristwatches; electronic clocks and watches; bracelets; watchbands; control clocks."
It also mentions "watches that communicate data to personal digital assistants."
Samsung has had its eye on the smart watch category for a while. In March, Samsung's executive vice president of mobile business, Lee Young-hee, said the company has been "preparing the watch product for so long."
"We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them," he said.
